For some children, mealtimes bring anxiety, frustration, or overwhelm. You can help by co-regulating, which means staying calm so your child can borrow your calm.
In the moment
- Lower your voice and slow down.
- Name the feeling: "This feels hard right now."
- Offer a small choice to restore a sense of control.
- Take the pressure off the food; the meal can still succeed.
Coping tools to practice
- Belly breathing: slow breaths, longer out than in.
- A comfort item at the table.
- A predictable routine so nothing is a surprise.
Afterward
Reconnect, whatever happened. Your relationship is more important than any single bite. Over time, safety at the table is what makes eating possible.
